Grattan Square, Dungarvan
A spacious Square of one
acre, built by the 5th and 6th Dukes of Devonshire in the 19th century. At the same time as the Da' Bridge. (See the post for "D") The
streets were laid out with Welsh slate, Yorkshire flags and Portland stone imported from England.
Notice the weigh house in the centre of the Square.
In the not so distant past the
horse fair was held in the Square the first Thursday of every month. I remember weaving through horses on my way to school.
On second thought, maybe it is the distant past after all.

The
Fair Day might be a thing of the past, but the Square of today is still the bustling
centre of Dungarvan. Shops, pubs and cafes line the Square. During festivals a stage is set-up for musicians, singers and dancers to entertain the crowds.

A
Farmers Market is held in the Square every Thursday morning. There are fresh
breads, jams, tarts, scones and quiches. The variety of pastries is just
mouth watering. There is a stall with locally made cheese and a fishmonger who
sets up in the corner and fillets your fish on the spot.
