A Shark of a Story

Thanks to Google Images.
Today is the big reveal..  The truth about my First Crusader Challenge story.

I have always loved the sea and did compete in sailing competitions around Southern Ireland in a GP 14 named "Rubber Duck"  I think the word fuliguline reminded me of this little experience.

The boat did in fact capsize into a school of Basking Sharks. Basking sharks are often seen traveling in larger schools of up to a 100 or more. I swear there were hundreds of them!

I was indeed wearing the thick Atlantic Ocean grade insulated wetsuit. Which I was told after the fact was a good thing or my skin could have been ripped to ribbons due to the basking sharks skin with its large dermal dentacles (denticle" translates to "small tooth).  Basking shark skin is very rough and scratchy because it is covered in MILLIONS of scales like tiny shark teeth!

The Basking Sharks sheer size and power must be respected. They are HUGE! They have two dorsal fins.  The larger one is to the front of the shark and smaller one towards the tail end.  Scary!

What I did not do was turn the boat to the wind and sail away leaving my not so Knight in Shining Armour behind.  It is what I wanted to do, but didn't. That could qualify as my good characteristic or my bad one.  Depends on the day.  My sailing days were numbered after this experience.

Jemi you were right!  Well done.

Now you all know a little something about Basking Sharks.  Blogging is so informative don't you think!

Hope 8 year old is suitably impressed. Little young fella is doing great. Not sleeping much and eating loads. Daughter is learning the joys of motherhood!

You learn something new each and every day if you have a mind to. At the time I thought they were barnacles. LOL! Glad you enjoyed my fishy tale Niamh.

Ah yes Kitty, but I didn't know that then. All I saw were hundreds of fins. And what came to mind was that opening scene from "Jaws"

Well, it all sounds very romantic, adventurous and impressive to a landlubber like me!

I'm enjoying finding out people's lies. hehe

Ann said...

Hi Charlotte, romantic...errr I don't know?

Hi Trisha, It is interesting isn't it? Many a plot could be conjured from the lies I think.

I loved your challenge story! It was so cute. I would have never guessed that was the lie.

So cool! Great job on fooling most everyone. These lies a re made of magic. (I love sharks.) ;)

I agree - maybe somebody should write a story incorporating all the Crusaders' lies. Wow, what a job that'd be. :D

Anyway, I popped back to tell you I gave you an award :)

Amazing story! I love the ocean and boats, but not the sharks.

Holy Moley! What a story! I'm terrified of sharks and think you're more than brave for being among those dudes. You've got a story for a book here!!

PBS did have a program about sharks several weeks ago. Come to find out, barnacles don't stick to the scales because of the way the water flows. This ties into cancer research and other areas. Really interesting!

Blogging IS so informative. Always such interesting stories, pieces of memoirs really, and always original as personal stories are! This is amazing information about sharks. I think we all shudder when we think of them; I do!

I came over to respond to the comment you posted on L'Aussie (Denise's place) yesterday whee she guest posted my story. Yes, we do all need hope to get through this life!

Wow, what an experience! I would have freaked out too in such a large group of sharks, even if I knew they weren't after me!
